Grant that sank in early 1900, and the American submarine USS H-1 that rests in the bottom of the ocean.

Each Day at our MAGBAY EXPEDITION is a true adventure, from traveling across the mangroves up north, to grey whale sightings all across the inner part of Magdalena and Margarita in specific seasons, as well as majestic San dunes to climb and explore. even sleeping under the sea of stars in our Glamping zone is a truly out-of-the-ordinary experience.

Our mission is to get you involved in Magdalena´s landscapes, its fauna, and flora, in unique ways. We are the only Dive Center Certified in touristic expeditions in Isla Magdalena and its surroundings, as well as being part of various wildlife monitoring projects, in collaboration with SINERGIA AZUL and marine biologists all across Baja California Sur. Magdalena expedition itinerary

  • We will meet at 3:30 pm at the Nautilus Dive Tech facilities in Cabo San Lucas, here the staff and guides will discuss with you about logistics and expedition objectives, as well as check your equipment (if you bring any) and give you any necessary gear.

After this, you can go rest for the night for the next day.

  • We will meet again at Nautilus Dive Tech at 8:30 am to start our road trip to San Carlos port, located north of Cabo San Lucas (419 km / 260 mi) with amazing desert, ocean, and mountain landscapes. Our first stop will be at La Paz, the capital of the Baja California Sur state (approximately 2 hrs from NDT). Here we will have lunch at an iconic restaurant and have some rest, then, we will continue our trip to San Carlos (6 hrs drive from La Paz). The estimated time of arrival to San Carlos will be 4:00 pm, here we will arrive at Mar y Arena Hotel. After eating a light lunch we will then board the boat and go to Magdalena Isla (Chirinola camping). Here you will be assigned a glamping tent, where you will spend the next 3 nights

After getting installed in your rooms we will have dinner and we will invite you to walk around the island.

We recommend sleeping early because the next day and activities will start at sunrise.

  • We will meet at sunrise to have breakfast. We propose to leave no later than 1 hour after sunrise so that we can have enough time for our adventure. We will travel by boat for between 2 - 3 hours to get to our snorkeling spot.

Keep your eyes open because on our way we will visit the birds island, the small town of Magdalena, and of course the infinite possibilities of marine wildlife. We will look for big congregations of birds that fly in circles around the huge ball baits of sardines hoping to dive in for a snack.

Meanwhile underwater the fastest fish in the ocean, the striped marlin (Kajikia audax) is hunting for sardines in the bait ball. We will get in the water and do snorkel while observing this unforgettable experience of watching the Marlins hunt.

The possibilities of encountering other marine wildlife are big and include species such as dolphins, humpback whales, grey whales, blue whales, mako sharks, silky sharks, sea lions, and mola mola among others. The Baja California peninsula is one of the most important migrating routes for wildlife in the pacific ocean, this offers us a great chance to encounter any of these amazing creatures. The activity lasts for about 3 - 4 hours (this can vary depending on your physical condition and weather conditions). We will have snacks, lunch boxes, and water onboard for you to enjoy at any point. Once back at the camp we will relax and have dinner at the restaurant Palapa.

For the next 2 days we will be enjoying different activities depending on what you prefer and of course weather conditions and time left, these activities are:

    Open Ocean Safari

We will cover the most area possible of the Pacific Ocean around the islands of Magdalena and Margarita to increase the chance of encountering more wildlife species that the area has to offer. This activity is snorkel and apnea only because we need to be able to get on and off of the boat with ease because we might need to move around to enhance your experience of watching the marlins since the activity is unpredictable and can last few minutes or can be long lasting depending on the behavior of these creatures. We recommend you to be in good physical condition for this activity.

    Scuba Diving

Magdalena Island has an area of more than 20 km of rocky reefs in which we can find kelp forests, sea lion colonies, shipwrecks, a sunken submarine, and a vast amount of tropical fish and invertebrates. We recommend being certified as an advanced diver so that you can enjoy any of the sites the area has to offer, however, there are plenty of sites for any level of certification. We will be doing 2 immersions if the weather conditions allow.

    Snorkel

Either marlin snorkeling, sea safari, or snorkeling around the island where we can encounter turtles, tropical fish, and sea lions among others. In the mangroves we can encounter juveniles for a huge amount of species that seek refuge from predators in these protected areas, the experience could be mind-blowing.

    Kayak

Magdalena Bay is protected by 2 big islands (Magdalena and Margarita), which provides really calm waters most of the time perfect for kayaking. You can go through the mangroves or visit the birds´ island for some bird watching or just kayak around the island to enjoy the peaceful bay.

    Island tour

Tour of the island, its mangroves, and dunes. Perfect to put your landscape and wildlife photography skills to the test, we can encounter coyotes and a huge amount of birds among other wildlife. Enjoy sunrises or sunsets and relax in the pristine landscapes of the island.

    Night walk

This can be done in any part of the island, the magic of these walks is that thanks to the distance from big cities we can observe the celestial vault at its greatest some nights you can be able to observe the milky way.

At the end of our 4th day, you can share your pictures and experiences of the trip with the guides, and discuss your observations and the different wildlife behaviors. Be prepared because we will not return to the glamping site, instead we will take the boat back to the Hotel Mar y Arena, there you will have your room assigned so you can take a shower and be prepared for the dinner, where we will share material and present to you the different wildlife protection projects that you were part of.

  • We will have breakfast in the hotel at 9:30 AM; after that, we will then head straight to Cabo San Lucas. once we arrive at Nautilus Dive Tech, we will conclude this amazing experience, if you want to get transported to your hotel or somewhere specific in the surroundings, be sure we can take you there!

  • We will gladly help in case you need help with some recommendations on where to stay after or before the ad- venture. If you have special requirements let us know when you reserve. It is important to consider that these activities are weather dependent. We will discuss each day what snacks and lunches we will take to our activities and there will be delicious and fresh food and drinks waiting for us on our return to camp.

ISLA MAGDALENA

Isla Magdalena is an elongated island in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. It is located about 30 miles (48 km) north of the city of Ciudad Constitución. The island is about 231 square miles (599 square km) in size and is mostly composed of sand dunes. The highest point on the island is only about 300 feet (91 m) above sea level.

Isla Magdalena is protected from the Pacific Ocean by the larger Isla Santa Margarita to the south. This sheltering effect creates a calm bay that is home to a variety of marine life, including gray whales, dolphins, sea turtles, and fish. The island is also home to a variety of birdlife, including pelicans, cormorants, and egrets.

The island is uninhabited, except for a small research station and a few seasonal fishermen. There are no roads on the island, and the only way to get there is by boat or seaplane.

Here are some additional geographic details about Isla Magdalena:
